The Hemel Hempstead Cycling Club was formed in 1933 when a group about 20 local cyclists decided that there was a need in the town for a club. This has since been vindicated as the membership has steadily increased over the past 75 years and is currently approximately 150 strong.
During this time the Club has produced champions at local, national and international levels. Members have ridden in the Olympic and Commonwealth Games with one bronze medal won in the Olympics in Montreal, 1976. Several members have subsequently had distinguished professional careers.
The Club caters for all the differing aspects of cycling, whether it is leisure or competitive. We always encourage and support new members to 'have-a-go' at a different aspect of this many-sided sport, making use of the wide range of facilities and experience in the Club.
Many Club members are involved in racing, on the road, time trialling, on the track, in cyclo-cross and on mountain bikes. Members range from Schoolboys and Girls from 8 years old to Veterans of over 40 years of age. There are coaching facilities available at all levels for all branches of the sport.
Regular Saturday and Sunday rides are organised for leisure and training purposes throughout the year, both on-road and off-road. We have day rides in France, the Isle of Wight and other parts of the UK. Members also participate in longer trips away with overnight stays, for example road cycling in the French Alps and mountain biking in Wales. For further information see the social rides page.
We have an active triathlon section in the club with members racing at all levels up to the GB age group teams. Read more on the triathlon and duathlon page.
Our clubnights are held in our own Clubhouse at the Nash Mills Recreation Centre, Nash Mills Lane, Kings Langley, adjacent to the Old Red Lion on the A4251 and is open every Monday evening at 7.30pm. with the exception of Bank Holidays. We organise social evenings such as quizzes, video evenings, talks or just socialise by having a chat in the comfort. There are also games and keep-fit equipment.
During the summer months (approx. end April through to August) on Thursday evenings we use Great Gaddesden Parish Hall where we hold our series of weekly Club Evening 10 mile Time Trials along the A4146.
Also we promote two Open Road Races, two Open Time Trials, a Reliability Ride and also events in association with other Clubs.
The Club is affiliated to the main cycling bodies, The British Cycling (BC), Cycling Time Trials (CTT), the British Cyclo-Cross Association (BC-CA), the Cyclist's Touring Club (CTC) and the British Schools Cycling Association (BSCA). It is also affiliated to the British Triathlon Association (BTA).
