Youth & GoRide

Welcome to the youth and junior section of Hemel Hempstead Cycling Club. Currently we have about 50 younger members in the club. They regularly take part in youth mountain bike rides, coached activities, taster sessions at the velodrome or at local circuiits, and even for a few, racing regularly in regional events.

We have a youth section for under 16 year olds and we have a junior squad for 16 to 18 year olds and aspiring racers. Both of these are open to all and only require that enthusiasm is brought along.

Hemel Hempstead Cycling Club is recogised by its Clubmark status as providing a safe and well organised environment for children to get experience of cycling.  Either for fun or in competition.

Monthly Youth MTB Ride

On the first Saturday of every month we run a free off-road club ride for the youth members in Ashridge. Non-members are welcome to come and try a ride before joining the club. Registration is 9:45am and it departs at 10am sharp unless otherwise stated. The starting point varies to suit the condition of the tracks so look at the calendar or phone a coach to check the starting point.

The ride is graded into ability groups and follows the local tracks and bridleways finishing at 12 noon.

It is aimed principally at 8-14 year olds who have completed go-ride skills courses or are already competent MTB riders. Anyone interested in coming along or helping out occasionally then get in touch with Helen or Roger.

Dates for 2010:

Usually first Saturday of the month throughout the year but check the calendar for details.  Ashridge ride unless stated otherwise.

Youth/Junior Squad

Following on from a successful start in 2008 we want to continue to grow in 2010.  This last year has seen youth/junior members take part in mountain bike races, cyclo-x, road racing, time trials and triathlon.  This is in addition to skills sessions and a trip to Newport Velodrome.

Keep an eye on the calendar and forums for special events.

If you live in the area and are keen to have a go then contact Gavin on 01442 864196 or Simon on 01442 865611. Along with the other coaches they are co-ordinating activities.

Skills courses

Twice a year the coaches run skills courses for inexperienced riders to give them the skills and confidence to tackle more challenging off-road rides and races. More experienced riders find them useful too to hone their bike control. Details will be published on the forum or to get on the mailing list then contact Helen.
