“The Wight Wizz” is our day trip to the Isle of Wight on Sunday 21-May-2017 for paid-up HHCC members (including 2nd Claim).

This is a great social day out cycling around the beautiful island, enjoying quiet roads, varied terrain, tea + cake stops, and fish and chips at the end. Participants are asked to wear Club jerseys.

We have an early start to drive down and park at Southampton docks, arriving by 07:30 to give us time to get kitted-up and catch the 8:00am Red Funnel ferry to East Cowes. We get breakfast on the ferry and arrive on the island at 9:00am, then set off to follow most of the marked cycle route around the island, making one or two stops for tea/coffee and cakes and even ice cream en route, arriving back in West Cowes mid-afternoon where traditionally we relax in the sun eating fish and chips. The route is about 100km in all but there are options to make it shorter if people want. We may on the day split into two or more groups, depending on how many people are riding.

We encourage car sharing for the journey to Southampton to save on fuel and parking costs.

Please reply to this topic if you would like to come. Any non-members wishing to come can join the Club online via our website.

Rendezvous Arrangements:
Meet at the Red Funnel ticket office at 07:30 with bikes and kit all ready to board. Traffic at that time in the morning should be light but be sure to check travel information for planned road works, etc., and allow enough time to get there according to your driving style. Following the M3, M27, M271 and A33 provides dual carriageways virtually all the way to the terminal.
We will be crossing on the car ferry (NOT the foot passenger Red Jet fast ferry) and can get breakfast on board, which might save some time at home!
Ferry and car parking info is below.

Car Sharing:
It makes sense to car-share and so if you can offer a lift to someone or need a lift then either make arrangements directly with others whom you know are going or post a comment.

The Ride:
We will generally be following the signposted "round the island" cycle route, which is about 65 miles long, in a clockwise direction. Being an island there are always options for short cuts. I may well have a shorter route of about 50 miles or so for those that are not feeling up to the full route. We will likely make the customary stops for tea/coffee and cake at Godshill and Freshwater, and ice-cream at the top of Blackgang Chine, then have fish and chips when we finish in West Cowes!
As this is a club-members-only event participants are requested to wear a club jersey.

Ferry:
Red Funnel car ferry from Southampton to East Cowes.
Terminal 1, Dock Gate 7, Town Quay Road, Southampton SO14 2AR.
Ferry departs Southampton at 08:00.
Return from East Cowes at 16:30 (there shouldn't be a problem getting the earlier crossing at 15:30 if we want to).
Foot passengers are £17.20 return, no charge for bicycles, although we can get a couple of group tickets which reduce the price considerably. Please bring some cash so that we can settle-up immediately.

Parking:

Gloucester Square Long Stay pay & display (SO14 2GH), Around £8.00 for 7+ hours, seems to be closest. It's a council-run car park located just off the High Street, about 100m north of Town Quay.

Triangle Car Park is located off Town Quay (on the docks side), 250m east of the ferry terminal. It is pay by phone and more expensive than Gloucester Square.

Is anyone going with space in their car? Barry is not coming and I'd prefer to not commit to the drive there and back (too tired ) but am very happy to pay for petrol and parking if anyone is happy to give me a lift...I'm in Hemel.
