Give powers to stop vehicles to the NEG - e-Petition

Postby Tim Hart » Wed Mar 06, 2013 10:39 pm

Please take a couple of minutes to sign this Government e-Petition if you participate in or support cycling racing on public roads. The National Escort Group help to make cycle races safer but we are not allowed to stop traffic, even though motor vehicles pose the greatest risk to the cyclists safety:

My experience is that they already do stop traffic! But I'll definitely sign the petition though.

I often stop traffic for emergencies - I stopped a car yesterday when an ambulance was turning right (the car was too far back to see the ambulance - but holding up the traffic on that side of the road saved them time). Tonight I stood in the road while marshalling so that cars would see me before they saw cyclists and would have to slow down (we are just as entitled to the road as anyone else!). Of course the downside to that strategy is if the driver doesn't see me or if they hit their accelerator instead of the brake as tragically happened today in Wales.

As Rear Admiral Grace Hopper said "if something is a good idea go ahead and do it - it's much easier to get forgiveness than permission!"
