Hemel v Icknield youth challenge competition

Postby hbojarski » Mon Jun 16, 2008 7:56 pm

We have challenged Icknield Road Club to a young riders challenge which will be happening on Saturday 28th June at Longdean School in Hemel. This will be a first taste of competition for many of our riders (aged 8-15 but mostly 8!) and will include the classic cycle events of slalom relay, hoop race, limbo and of course a Time Trial because we are The Hemel after all.
We have got one team confirmed from each club but are hoping to field a second team too so any young riders please get in touch with me. £2 entry fee includes a team T-shirt and refreshments. We would also be delighted to see any other club members so please come along and give some support, but stand still for too long and you may be given a stopwatch and clipboard!

The competition took place on Saturday and was a great success.
Icknield surprised us by claiming not to have much of a team, then they turned up on the day in a minibus with 12 riders against our team of 6. They also had a good 2 or 3 years advantage over most of our riders but some handicapping helped a little and our riders also did some great performances in the four events. The full results will get posted once I get round to typing them all up, but a few notable performances:

Owen & James: joint 5th overall, and just one place behind them was Sam.
Best placed girl overall: Emily
Limbo: James 1st, Nathan 2nd, Owen & Emily joint 3rd. This was definitely our best event!
2 lap Time trial: James 4th overall (great result against the older riders as there was no handicap for this)
Slalom; Owen 2nd overall.
Obstacle course; Sam 2nd overall.

Icknield's star rider on the day was Reuben who won the other 3 events and so he was individual champion, and helped Icknield win the team event.

Icknield have promised to host a return match sometime after the summer holidays, and we look forward to meeting many of their young riders again at the cyclo-cross events this winter.

Great stuff.

Our young Go-Riders are clearly more successful than most of us grown-up members of the club. It looks like the future is bright.
