Millbrook Classic For Men 07/05/12

Postby Ian Baynes » Sun May 06, 2012 7:00 pm

I’m taking part in the Millbrook Classic Men’s Circuit Race at the Millbrook proving ground in Bedfordshire on bank holiday Monday (7th May).
The race is a 75 km, 2/3/4 category event and takes place over 8.5 laps of a circuit that includes both Alpine-like climbs and the banked speed bowl.
The men’s race is merely a support event to the 2 Days of Bedford Women’s International Stage Race that will culminate in a final day individual TT stage in the morning and an 85 km road race in the afternoon on Monday.
My race starts around 11:30 and should prove to be my toughest so far. Fingers crossed I can transfer some of my recent form in TTs back over to the roads.

If anyone is at a loose end and wants to watch some top level international women’s road racing on a closed roads circuit plus see how long it takes for me to get dropped in the men’s support race then feel free to come along to Millbrook on Monday.

Oh heck

All the very best for tomorrow Ian - if I wasn't working we'd be making a family outing of it.

With your recent form and climbing ability you could be right there in the mix - shame you've not got a few team mates to back you up but I'm sure you'll build a few alliances along the way...

Ride strong, stay safe mate.

I'll be expecting a full race report by the time I get home from work.

Thanks for the good luck wishes, unfortunately they didn't help
My race only lasted 8 km until I punctured. Doh! There was no neutral service for the race so that was that, game over.TBH it would have been hard to be paced back on given the parcours anyway. The conditions were so cold and wet that when the front Pro Race 3 deflated part of me was quite relieved, it was no fun out there and my knees were frozen.

Thanks to Steve & Rachel Hewitt for coming all the way over to support me, despite the appalling conditions. Sorry I couldn't have given you more to cheer. The course itself was fantastic to ride; with steep climbs, fast descents and some awesome hairpins, and is definitely one to bookmark for next year.

My next road race is the 89 km CC Ashwell Primavera event on 20/05/12 over at the Old Warden/Cardington course. Hopefully there will be three of us there in the race (Giles, Chris & me) and the weather will have improved.

Really tough luck - I'll keep my mouth shut and fingers crossed next time.

I'm planning to ride out to see the guys at the CC Ashwell race on the 20th if anyone fancies coming along - meeting place and time TBC but it would need to be fairly early to see a decent amount of the racing - sign up below...

Onwards - as Baynsey would say

Real bad luck Ian. I'd have a ceremonial burning of those Michelin Pro 3's if I was you :(

More to come on the 20th and I should be able to make it over to cheer the lads on with Sam :D

I did wonder if you had actually started Ian - I must have missed you go through the finish line the first time... and didn't see you after that as obviously you never made it that far!
The rain wasn't very nice. Think of me having been at the finish line since 9:30 in the morning until I packed up at 4:30pm!
Thankfully I had brought the club gazebo so at some shelter... but I was pretty cold most of the day!

Baynesey - you need to get a rabbits foot mate, find a four leafed clover and kiss the Blarney stone!!!! One of them must work! Stuff fancy wheels and tyres, just get to the end! Helen and I will cheer for you on the 20th at Ashwell and you can have a spare wheel from us if its allowed! With your current form we know we will have lots to cheer. Riding over sounds good Sam.
