Hertfordshire Sprint Championships

Postby felixlangley » Fri May 29, 2015 8:18 pm

Six Hemel triathletes competed in the Herts Sprint Distance Championships at Stanborough Lakes in Welwyn last Sunday. The county championships are a new addition to the local racing calendar, organised by Active Training World in collaboration with a number of the county’s major clubs. The first edition turned out to be a well organised race with a quality course that brought out a strong field and not a little inter-club rivalry.

With the second wave of the morning unleashing the entire championship field on Stanborough’s South Lake in a storm of thrashing limbs, the swim was certainly a physical one, with sighting made trickier by some rather overcast conditions. Hannah managed a very brisk 12:36, with several other quick splits (12:44 for Scott, 13:57 for Martyn, 17:20 for Carol). My legs felt a bit wonky on the 100m run to transition, but I managed an uncharacteristically tidy T1 before dashing up the rather unhelpful ramp to the bike mount on the main road.

Once clear of the first roundabout and out on the open road, the out-and-back bike course opened up into an excellent undulating ride through Cromer Hyde before turning up a country lane just outside Wheathampstead for the only real climb on the route. This was followed by a narrow, winding descent before hitting the main road back towards transition, which felt extremely quick in parts.

The run course consisted of two grassy laps of Stanborough Park, again offering plenty of undulation and a short, tough hill at the end of each lap. My run didn’t feel great but I just about kept it together. By the finish line, there was no doubt that this was a fitting test for a county championship.

Scott stormed home in 1:10:32 to claim 10th overall and his age group. He was followed by Martyn and me. Bizarrely, I won the 30-34 age group from 32nd in the race, a performance that would only have earned me 12th at 35-39! Hannah was next home, followed by Carol, completing a strong shown by the club. Unfortunately, Mike did not complete the run course in his second race of the weekend, the first having involved the small matter of qualifying for the Worlds at Dorney the previous day!

The overall atmosphere at this race was really good, with all athletes competing for the champs starting in the same swim wave and plenty of cheering and shouting around the run course. There was healthy rivalry between local clubs, and strong teams were fielded across the board. Unfortunately, due to being one female short, HHCC could not compete for the Championship Club title, something we’ll hopefully put right next year.

A Hertfordshire standard distance championship is planned for the 30th of August at the same venue. The course will be doubled up for this event which should make for a great race. Get your entries in!
